Growing Opportunities: Enterprise and Supplier Development at Seeds Of Africa

Introduction
Enterprise and Supplier Development (ESD) is more than just business growth—it’s about unlocking opportunities that transform lives and communities. In South Africa, small businesses are the backbone of the economy, yet many face barriers such as limited access to funding, mentorship, and markets. At Seeds Of Africa, we believe that by nurturing entrepreneurs and strengthening local suppliers, we plant the seeds for sustainable change, job creation, and community resilience.

The Challenge in Numbers
98% of South Africa’s businesses are small and medium enterprises (SMEs), yet many struggle to survive beyond their first 3 years.
SMEs contribute nearly 40% to South Africa’s GDP, but access to resources and markets remains a key barrier.
Only 14% of small businesses have access to formal credit or financial support.
ESD programs have the potential to create millions of jobs, but without structured training and mentorship, many entrepreneurs remain excluded.
These figures reveal both the challenges and the immense potential of investing in enterprise development.
Seeds Of Africa’s Response
Through our ESD initiatives, we create opportunities for entrepreneurs, small businesses, and suppliers to thrive. Our programs include:
Business Skills Training: Equipping entrepreneurs with essential knowledge in finance, operations, and marketing.
Mentorship & Coaching: Guiding small business owners through real challenges with practical solutions.
Supplier Development: Strengthening local suppliers to meet industry standards and access larger markets.
Access to Resources: Linking entrepreneurs with networks, tools, and opportunities to scale their impact.
A Story Behind the Numbers
Meet Lerato, a young entrepreneur who started a small catering business in her community. Without proper systems or training, she struggled to manage finances and grow her client base. Through Seeds Of Africa’s ESD workshops and mentorship, Lerato gained business management skills, connected with new suppliers, and was introduced to local corporate procurement opportunities. Today, her business not only sustains her family but also provides jobs to five other women in her community. Lerato’s story is proof that when small businesses succeed, communities prosper.
